Our Lab Members:

P.I. Contact: Paul Mischel, M.D.
Administrative Assistant to Dr. Paul Mischel
Michelle Martinez

Post-Doctoral Scholars:

Deliang Guo, Ph.D.
I came from China and I obtained my Ph.D. in molecular cell biology from Beijing. I am interested in cancer cell biology and is dedicated to unravel how far cancer metabolism changes. My current project is trying to elucidate how RTK/PI3K/Akt signaling regulates in cancer cell metabolism and lipogenesis, looking for novel molecular targets in this network, and trying to promote some drugs targeting this pathway to clinical trial.

Tiffany Huang, Ph.D.
Tiffany is a 3rd year post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory. She is currently working on profiling secreted molecules (growth factors, cytokines, and chemokines) in glioblastoma cells using DNA-encoded antibodies and a bio-barcode readout in collaboration with James Heath's lab at Cal-Tech.

Akio Iwanami, M.D., Ph.D.
I am a postdoctoral fellow from Tokyo, Japan. I am interested in the contribution of tumor initiating cells in the pathogenesis of GBM as well as resistance to conventional and newly-developed targeted therapies.

Kazuhiro Tanaka, M.D., Ph.D.
I started as a post-doctoral fellow from Kobe, Japan in April of 2009. I try to identify and analyze a key signal pathway in the tumorigenesis of GBM in order to develop effective molecular target therapies.

Daisuke Kuga, M.D.
Daisuke is a 2nd year post-doctoral fellow. He is currently working on detection of novel mutations which may cause resistance to EGFR inhibitor therapy in GBM. In addition, he routinely scores immunohistochemistry stained clinical slides for quantitative analysis with another post-doctoral fellow Akio Iwanami.

David Piccioni, M.D.
Dr. Piccioni will be arriving in July 1, 2009

Beatrice Gini, Ph.D.                                                                                                                                                                I am from the University of Verona, Italy. I am working in Mischel Lab since October 2009 as post-doctoral fellow. Currently I am studying GBM autopsy samples and cell lines in order to find new insights in the EGFR signaling cascade. In particular I am evaluating the expression of particular protein isoforms in GBM that may influence the EGFR pathway and that could determine the highly infiltrating nature of GBM cells.

Graduate Students:

David Akhavan, M.D./Ph.D. Program
I am originally from Maryland, but raised in Los Angeles. On my free time I like to enjoy the rugged outdoors. My main scientific interest is how EGFR driven glioma develops resistance to EGFR targeted inhibitors. I am also interested in how cancer cell metabolism is different from normal cell metabolism and how to take advantage of these differences in order to hault tumorigenesis.

David Nathanson, Ph.D. Program
My work involves analyzing the molecular signatures of single cells in Glioblastoma. Using a microfluidic based platform developed here at UCLA, we can analyze the complex signaling networks of individual cells in a heterogeneous tumor using microliter sample volumes. This will allow us to identify cells which are most likely to respond or be resistant to molecularly targeted therapy.

Staff Research Associates:

Shaojun Zhu, Lab Manager
I am from mainland China. After finishing my Master degree, I came to U.S. pursuing my research career and lately joined the Mischel Lab. I perform molecular biological experiments in GBM translational research on cell signal transduction.

Huijun Yang, SRA III

Undergraduate Students:

Angela Liu
I started in the Mischel lab under graduate mentor David Nathanson in the fall quarter of my second year. I am currently working on functional characterization of the receptor-like protein tyrosine phosphatase Dep-1, in the context of GBM. The particular focus of the project will aim to delineate the implication of Dep-1 in the co-activation of receptor tyrosine kinases and explore Dep-1 as a potential therapeutic target to resistance and adaptation to molecular targeted therapy of GBM.

Felicia Reinitz
Felicia is in her fifth year as an undergraduate and joined the lab in January of 2008. She is currently working with David Nathanson and Angela Liu. Their project focuses on the role of Dep1, a receptor-like protein tyrosine phosphatase, in Glioblatoma, and how it may contribute to tumor growth and resistance to some therapies.

Anke Ziegenbalg
I am second year undergraduate neuroscience student at UCLA. I work alongside Daisuke Kuga on mutation analysis of genes identified to cause drug resistance.
